History
During the early days of technology adoption, subsidiaries of the San Miguel Group formed their own IT departments and employed their own IT personnel. These small groups of IT individuals mainly provided technical and infrastructure support to their individual companies. In 1994, SMC senior management made the important decision to invest in technology if San Miguel is to become a world-class company. It decided to implement an Enterprise Resource Planning system and use it as the backbone for its operations. A year later, a select team of IT specialists and business process experts from the Beer Division and SAP consultants from Germany successfully completed the first ever implementation of SAP-ERP in the Philippines. Subsequent rollouts were done in the SMC breweries, the various business units of the San Miguel food group, the entire packaging group, and even some of SMC’s international operations.
In 1999, to optimize and capitalize on synergies in IT human resources, SMITS, Inc. was spun off as a separate IT company. Its main thrust was to provide cost-effective services and support to San Miguel’s increasing requirements for IT-based business solutions. And the rest as they say is history.
