Globe Telecom launches it’s WiMax (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) service, it will be the first in the Philippines.
WiMax is a standards-based technology designed to enable the deployment of wireless broadband access as a cost-efficient alternative to cable and wired broadband DSL.
This new technology also aims to improve reach since it can cover distances greater than those covered by other wireless technologies like WiFi, CDMA, or 3G.
Despite strong subscriber growth, Globe Telecom’s net income slumped 9 percent to P16 billion in the first nine months of the year due to continued investments in its broadband business and lower usage by mobile subscribers.
The country’s second biggest telecommunications provider said profits for the July to September period declined by 8 percent to P2.6 billion as revenue sources, including fees from text messages, calls, broadband use, posted flay growth compared to the three months prior.
Smart Communications Inc., a unit of telecommunications giant Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., said Thursday it was able to meet its end-2008 subscriber target despite the economic slowdown.
In a statement, Smart said it recorded a total of 35 million subscribers last year, up 16 percent from the 2007 level.
The company noted that its client base grew despite slow consumer spending and stiff competition because of services focused on specific segments of prepaid and postpaid users.
