The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PSE: TEL, NYSE: PHI), commonly known as PLDT, is the largest telecommunications company in the Philippines. PLDT is also the largest company in the Philippines, ranked 1138th in the April 2009 update of Forbes’ Global 2000 list.
Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (TEL) was incorporated on November 28, 1928 following the merger of four telephone companies under US ownership, namely, Philippine Telephone and Telegraph Company, Cebu Telephone and Telegraph Company, Panay Telephone and Telegraph Company, and Negros Telephone and Telegraph Company. In 1967, effective control of TEL was sold by General Telephone and Electronics Corporation to a group of Filipino businessmen.
Smart Communications is a wholly-owned mobile phone and Internet service subsidiary of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT). Its main focus is to handle the PLDT Group’s wireless services business. It operates a nationwide cellular network covering over 99 percent of the population. On April 20, 2008, Smart updated its logo, changing with the new, shortened letter "S", stylized versions of letters "A" & "T", and a new line below the logo.
On June 30, 2007, Smart reported that its GSM network consisted of 100 switches and 100,000 base stations, over 2 of which are equipped with wireless broadband capability. It also has over 23 3G base stations nationwide. On September 30, 2008, it reported that it has a little over 34 million subscribers on its GSM/EDGE/UMTS networks (which includes 13 million subscribers of Pilipino Telephone’s Talk ‘N Text service that is planned to be transferred to Smart as direct subscribers).
ACeS also sells its prepaid satellite phone service in partnership with Smart under the brand SmartLink.
Globe Telecom. Inc. (GLO) was originally incorporated on January 15, 1935 as Globe Wireless Limited with a franchise to operate wireless long distance message services in the Philippines. The company eventually changed its name to the present one in 1992, and welcomed a new foreign partner the following year in Singapore Telecom, Inc.
GLO is a telecommunications company in the Philippines. It offers its wireless services including local, national long distance, international long distance, international roaming and other value-added services through three brands: Globe Postpaid, Globe Prepaid, and TM. The company also provides its subscribers with mobile payment and remittance services under the GCash brand. GLO also provides wireline voice communications (local, national and international long distance), broadband and data services to individuals, small and medium enterprises, corporations and enterprises in the Philippines through Innove Communications, Inc. (Innove), a wholly owned subsidiary.
Innove Communications wants to help customers go global. Through brand names Globelines and GlobeQUEST, the telecommunications company provides individuals and businesses an array of voice services (including postpaid and prepaid telephone lines, national and international direct dialing, fax, and centrex) as well as Internet services (such as dial-up and broadband/DSL). Innove is owned by one of the largest telecommunications companies in the Philippines, Globe Telecom (which is largely owned by Singapore Telecommunications and Ayala Corporation).
